In 1927, Elisabeth, a Breton, married Naim in France, a cousin of Amanullah Khan, the progressive king of Afghanistan, whom she had met in Saint-Malo. After the birth of their son, Hakim, a year later, they decided to return to Kabul. They stopped off in Malta, Aden (Yemen), then Bombay (India), where they had to stay for a few days before reaching the Afghan capital.

They will stay there for a year. Because, there, Amanullah Khan, this modern king, who advocates female emancipation, gives up his place, under pressure from Habibullah Ghazi, nicknamed Bacha-e Saqâo, a conservative and bloodthirsty rebel. On December 5, 1929, the couple finally sets off for Kabul. The country, then led by Nadir Shah, continues to severely restrict the freedom of women, forced to wear the chadri, this full veil that bars the face with a grid. Elisabeth will then fight for their condition…
