The teenager hit by a motorist as he got off the bus, the day after his thirteenth birthday on Tuesday, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, has only a slim chance of survival and his family is considering organ donation.

“The news of my grandson, brain dead. We are waiting for organ donation. He will save lives, my beautiful Nathan!” revealed Nathalie Macameau in a heartbreaking post on Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after the collision involving her grandson.

“Please be vigilant around school buses,” she added in another post.

When it was released

On Tuesday, Nathan Macameau, a second-year high school student, was returning home by school bus after his day at Amos High School.

Around 4:30 p.m., the teenager, who had just celebrated his 13th birthday the day before, got off the school bus near a curve on Route 111, at the intersection of Rue du Faubourg.

He was then hit by a vehicle travelling south as he tried to cross the road to get to his home.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the school bus had its turn signals on, but the vehicle apparently did not stop.

Inside the bus, around forty students witnessed the sad scene.

The Harricana School Services Center also specified on Facebook that it had put in place measures to support students and staff at Nathan secondary school.

Donations to the family

The teenager was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

According to his grandmother’s post, he unfortunately no longer has any brain activity.

His loved ones are currently at his bedside at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal.

On Wednesday morning, a friend of the victim’s family launched a crowdfunding campaign to help them.

“At the moment, Nathan is fighting for his life. Since he was urgently transferred to Ste-Justine, we have chosen to take a means so that his parents can be at his bedside for as long as they need to. These funds will be given to them in full to help them cover travel expenses,” wrote Mylène Bérubé, organizer of the campaign, which has already exceeded $16,000 in donations, on the website.

“Slow down”

Mme Bérubé describes young Nathan as a “kind teenager with a huge heart.”

“Please be generous and above all slow down on the roads!” she concluded in her message.

In addition, the driver of the vehicle, a 72-year-old resident of Taschereau, was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

Investigators and reconstructionists were dispatched to the scene to try to establish the causes and circumstances of the .

“If there was indeed a traffic violation, there could be charges,” said Nancy Fournier, a sergeant with the SQ.
