Melvita Devoe was hit by at least one firearm projectile on Sunday in what appears to be a context of domestic violence. Alerted by neighbors who heard at least one explosion, the police went to the victim’s apartment, located on rue Saint-Roch. The 50-year-old was rushed to a hospital center, where she finally succumbed to her injuries, the Sûreté du Québec confirmed on Wednesday.

No history

Her husband, with whom she had been living in this retirement complex for about a year, was arrested by investigators and appeared at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse on Monday. If Bernard Melvin Devoe, 83, was initially facing charges of attempted murder, it is highly likely that these will now turn into a murder charge. The man, who uses a wheelchair, has no criminal record.

Originally from the Philippines, Melvita Devoe arrived in Quebec a few years ago. The couple previously married in 2019.
