A head-on collision between two cars in the night from Saturday to Sunday found a tragic epilogue: the driver of an accident car in Saanen (BE) was found dead in Rossinière (VD), in the Vernex lake.

The accident occurred this morning at 12:45 a.m. In a right-hand bend, a car traveling from Saanen in the direction of Rougemont collided with a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. At the scene, the intervention forces discovered a car and two people with minor injuries, who were taken to hospital by ambulance for a check-up.

The car coming from Saanen rolled over and fell several meters down a steep slope into the Sarine. The intervention forces found no one in the cabin or around the car.

In order to find any passengers, the search was therefore extended, in particular along the Sarine by means of a police dog, and by air with Rega. A large-scale search was then undertaken.

Sunday afternoon, 15 kilometers from the accident, the intervention forces of the Vaud cantonal police discovered and released a lifeless man in Lake Vernex. “At the scene, only his death could be confirmed,” said the Bernese cantonal police, according to whom it is the driver of the car. “There are clues as to his identity, which has not yet been formally established,” said the police.

The intervention mobilized several patrols and special services from the Bernese cantonal police, intervention forces from the Vaud cantonal police, firefighters from Saanen and Lausanne, a Rega team, members of the Swiss Alpine Rescue, two ambulance crews and a Rapid Responder.

The road between Saanen and Rougemont was completely cordoned off until early in the morning, then an alternating traffic was put in place. According to current information, the man was alone in his car. An investigation is underway under the direction of the Oberland Regional Public Prosecutor’s Office.
