It is called the “Tanzverbot”, the prohibition of dancing. In Thurgovia, as in a handful of German cantons, all non-religious-festive, cultural or sporting events-are prohibited on Good Friday, at Easter, Pentecost, the federal day of grace action and Christmas day. In these cantons, no Christmas disco or Luna Park as in Geneva, nor large Pentecost concerts as there are in Neuchâtel. Because in their laws, the status of the days to which these religious festivals differ from Sundays, the national holiday, May 1 or the New Year.
The Grand Council Thurgovien intends to remedy this peculiarity, inherited from Christianity and considered by a majority of elected officials as anachronistic. In December, he voted for the first time in favor of the relaxation of the law on rest days, after a heated debate, in order to authorize the demonstrations during the religious festivals. “Provided that they take place inside and that 500 people as much as possible can participate at the same time”, as is the case in St-Gall, explains the Thurgauer Zeitung.
