One of the highlights of the Xbox Developer Direct was undoubtedly the part dedicated to DOOM: The Dark Ages. This new entry in the legendary franchise promises to be as daring as it is explosive, plunging players into a medieval era where Hell is more merciless than ever.
DOOM meets the dark ages
After an enigmatic teaser in 2024, id Software hits hard with a very intense trailer, a trademark of the studio. Forget futuristic military bases and Martian landscapes: DOOM: The Dark Ages transports us to the heart of a reimagined Middle Ages, where plague and demons coexist to plunge the world into apocalyptic chaos.
Visually, the game is a spectacle. The developers have retained the frenetic and bloody DNA of the series while adapting it to this new era. The id Tech engine shines here with incredibly detailed medieval environments and a fluidity that once again seems foolproof. id Software being renowned for its technical mastery, we have the right to expect a very strong game this year.
The developers have, for example, revealed in detail the chainsaw shield, all actions of which will be done with a single button, contextualized according to what is happening on the screen. The fights have been densified with the use of combos and new finishes.
iD Software has also placed a lot of emphasis on the brutal side of DOOM: The Dark Ages with some of the most devastating weapons in the series which will have only one purpose: to massacre, impale or tear apart the hordes that present themselves in the way.
Small specificity of this episode, the player will be free to progress and the rhythm of discovery of the arenas and territories of the game. The levels of DOOM: The Dark Ages are less linear and the developers evoke a “real sandbox” with the most large play space never seen in a DOOM.
