“In Indonesia, millions of tons of water fell suddenly in certain places in the country. It’s a catastrophe, look at the violence of the power of the water that’s coming, it’s madness.” This is how a viral video begins which is circulating on TikTok, Instagram and even Facebook. We see what looks like a parking lot submerged from one second to the next by liters and liters of brown water falling from the sky. The downpours are so powerful that they carry away some vehicles. Text affixed to the image describes this precipitation as “walls of water”.
The voice-over explains how this phenomenon would occur, “entirely explainable by meteorologists”. “It is a sudden accumulation of billions of droplets which concentrate in large blocks of water”, which would occur when “a hot wind confronts a cold wind”, because of the temperature difference.
FAKE OFF
This is not an unusual meteorological phenomenon. This video was also not filmed in Indonesia. It was generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Using a reverse image search, we also see that it is not recent, but that it has been circulating, in several languages, at least since November 2024.
Despite its fairly realistic appearance at first glance, several elements allow us to recognize the work of an AI. As the downpour falls, a yellow car, positioned in the middle of the image, suddenly disappears. HAS(…)
