129 million dollars! Senegal benefits from the lion’s share in the regional Best project, dedicated to access to electricity and energy storage technologies. As reported by SourceA, the opening ceremony of the regional mission to support the implementation of the project took place yesterday, in the presence of the Director General of Senelec, Pape Toby Gaye. The official launch of this program will be held this Saturday in Sédhiou.
This project, supported by a total envelope of 460 million dollars, plans to allocate 129 million dollars to Senegal. According to information from SourceAthis initiative is part of efforts to strengthen universal access to electricity, a still major challenge in many regions of the country, particularly in rural areas.
The project Best concerns three countries in the West African region: Niger, Mauritania and Senegal. According to Kwawu Mensan Gaba, sector director for West Africa Energy at the World Bank, almost half of the 2,000 localities to be electrified are in Senegal. The latter emphasizes that “the contracts have been signed, and it is imperative to move on to accelerated implementation. »
As detailed SourceAthis initiative is part of the continental objective of connecting 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030, an ambition supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank through their initiative M300 launched in April 2024.
-The Director General of Senelec, Pape Toby Gaye, highlighted the strategic importance of this project: “Universal access to electricity remains a major challenge for many regions. It is imperative to put in place suitable solutions to extend this vital service to populations, particularly in remote areas,” he told SourceA.
The current mission aims to assess the progress made in the implementation of the “access to electricity” component of the project and to identify areas for improvement with the different implementation units. Always according to SourceAanother program, the padaesis underway and allocates an additional $150 million for electrification in Senegal. This dual commitment demonstrates the priority given to energy in the national development strategy.
