Traffic forecast for ski holidays 2025: heavy traffic expected

Due to vacation departures, we should expect busier roads in the coming weeks, particularly to get to winter sports resorts. The Federal Roads Office (OFROU) also foresees higher traffic on the Plateau motorways and in urban areas.

The effects of departures on vacation and to winter sports resorts will be felt especially on weekends, probably on the A1, A2, A3, A8, A9 and A13, in particular in the regions of Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lucerne and Lugano, in the area of the Gotthard tunnel, on the San Bernardino route between Sargans and Rothenbrunnen as well as on the sections towards the Bernese Oberland and Valais.

Unload localities by staying on the highway in case of traffic jams

Often, a large volume of traffic leading to traffic jams and loss of time on the main roads also causes unwanted evasive traffic, which weighs on the inhabitants of localities along national roads and ultimately has the effect of paralyzing traffic in the regions. Individual traffic and business traffic at local level are disrupted, as are public transport (buses, post buses) and soft mobility on cantonal and municipal roads, and the risk of accidents increases. It is therefore important that travelers stay on the highway even in traffic jams, if only out of respect for the local population.

During this holiday period, OFROU remains in close contact with the authorities of the particularly affected cantons, in particular with the police forces.
