MEETING OF THE PEACEBUILDING COMMISSION (CCP) ON GUINEA-BISSAU

INTERVENTION BY MR. NICOLAS DE RIVIÈRE

PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TO THE UNITED NATIONS

New York, January 22, 2025

Mr. President,

I thank the Brazilian presidency and all the speakers, in particular Minister Carlos Pinto Pereira for the presentation of Guinea-Bissau's peacebuilding priorities.

This meeting demonstrates the importance that the Peacebuilding Commission brings to monitoring the situation in Guinea-Bissau. The challenges facing the country require cross-cutting responses involving the entire United Nations system, bilateral partners and civil society. I am thinking in particular of education, economic diversification, as well as the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. The stabilization of institutions is also a key dimension, and as such it is important that legislative elections can be organized.

I would like to salute the action of the Peacebuilding Fund in this country. The Fund implements several projects focused on political stabilization, the participation of women and youth, the protection of human rights, the management of natural resources or governance in the health sector.

France stands alongside Guinea-Bissau in support of its priorities, as shown by the visits of President Macron to Bissau in 2022 and President Embalo to last December. France provides cooperation in the training of agricultural engineers, the fight against illegal fishing and in the field of education, notably through the French international school of Bissau. She will remain engaged on all these subjects in support of Guinea-Bissau.

Thank you.

France
