In Oise, a clothing store reserved for young people looking for work

Every day, people cross the threshold of the solidarity cloakroom of the local mission of the Vallée de l'Oise, located in the shopping arcade of the Auchan shopping center in Nogent-sur-Oise, thinking of entering a clothing store. Yet none of the items neatly lined up on hangers are for sale.

These clothes are intended for young people aged 16 to 25 from the local mission looking for work, to allow them to wear correct and appropriate clothing before going to a job interview. This makeover is only the final step in a much more extensive integration process, which has been thought out and designed for two years.

“It’s not just about giving them clothes without preparation,” confirms Malha Aïb, project manager and responsible for the solidarity locker room, also called an employment locker room. It is a four-step process which is offered to young people aged 16 to 29, residing in the territory of the Sud Oise Agglomeration (ACSO). They are sent to us by Travail or the Second Chance School but they can also be young people who pass in front of the locker room window and come to find out. »

From image coaching to an interview preparation workshop, young people first review the basics. And to put this teaching into practice, there's nothing like a simulation with major recruiters in the sector, such as Parc Astérix, Chanel, or even Sainte-Lucie. Companies which take turns according to a pre-established schedule to ensure these interview rehearsals, which are very important for young candidates. “Afterwards, they are entitled to a debriefing which allows them to correct their errors and list points for improvement,” adds the manager.

It is only after taking part in these first meetings that young people will be able to complete their journey, by coming to receive a complete outfit for their interviews. “If we buy some of it, the clothes come from collections among employees of partner companies, from the Villers-Saint-Paul recycling center and also from donations from individuals,” continues the wardrobe manager. The clothes must be in excellent condition, it is not a question of bringing us used clothes to get rid of. »

Launched in September 2024, the system has already produced encouraging results with real recruitment opportunities for young people who are often far from the world of work. “The important thing is not to come and look at and choose clothes, it is the whole process carried out beforehand, to give them confidence and a real chance of getting a job,” underlines Malha Aïb.
