further disruptions in waste collections to be feared

The strike continues within waste collector Veolia, TodayinLiege learned this Monday morning from union sources. Workers at the waste treatment company stopped work on Friday. They had to decide whether or not to resume this Monday during an AGM.

Through this movement, the workers wish to denounce their working conditions and “tense relations with management”. They note a significant number of people dismissed, an overload of work following the introduction of the new collection schedule and the sending of a worker to intensive care, who worked even though he had reported tightness in the thorax.

“The straw that broke the camel’s back on Friday was the fact that we let a driver go who was complaining of chest pains,” recalls Vincent Lamberigts, CSC Transcom permanent secretary. “On his return, he had to be taken to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery because he had a heart attack. This created a great stir among his colleagues and they expressed again this morning the great discomfort they feel”. The depot doors are open, there is no picket but the movement is respected by all staff.

This Friday, waste collection was disrupted in several districts of Liège but also in neighboring municipalities. Disruptions are also expected this Monday.

Management has a meeting scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the unions but ‘given the agenda, it is unlikely that the trucks will leave today’, the company says. “We are expecting concrete progress: a change in management, more consideration and respect, a reduction in the workload because with the new tour system it has become unbearable, quarterly discussions with management on the problems encountered at the daily, first aid training for all staff,” concludes Vincent Lamberigts,
