There are still villages which do not have access to water and electricity, like Colobane Thiombane, located in the commune of Mont-Rolland.
By Cheikh CAMARA –
“We are tired of living without electricity or drinking water, of living in insecurity and fear, without paved roads!” This cry of distress comes from the populations of the religious city of Colobane Thiombane, located in the commune of Mont-Rolland (Department of Tivaouane). They held a press briefing which focused on three points: “Electricity, water and paved road.”
An opportunity for the monitoring, alert and mutual aid committee of Colobane Thiombane, whose one and only objective is the development of the village and cohesion between its members, to discuss, first of all, “the lack of electricity in the locality located 5 km from the Zac de Thiès, where 3,500 people officially reside in 2021. The spokesperson for the day of the populations, Pape Dia, reminds the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (Aser) that “as part of the rural electrification program in the commune of Mont-Rolland, only the two villages of Colobane Thiombane and Thiouroukh, among the 18 in the local authority, suffer from a notorious lack of electricity, a state of affairs which leads to total insecurity, frequent thefts and attacks. multiple”.
-The populations recall that the village of Colobane Thiombane, created in 1940 by Mame Alpha Thiombane, a scholar of Islam and Mokhadam of Serigne Babacar Sy, welcomes each year, during its traditional Gamou, thousands of faithful pilgrims coming from all over the the world. Also to remind: “We have been building a health hut since 2023, but since then, this structure has neither equipment nor medicine.” They question the mayor of Mont-Rolland on the issue. Pape Dia and his comrades are also offended by the fact that “the village of Colobane Thiombane is deprived of its most absolute right: access to drinking water”. They point out that “this precious liquid is a rare commodity in the locality”, which, they say, has led to “a threatening unsanitary condition in the village”. Also to think that “in the absence of free connection to this network which is excessively expensive, we deserve the privilege of being connected to it”.
The inhabitants of Colobane Thiombane would also like “our asphalt road, which is not even 3 km long, to be tarmac”. They report that “indeed, this causes us a lot of problems. First of all, there are endless potholes on the road, causing a lot of inconvenience, especially the evacuation of our pregnant women, always transported on carts, and who, sometimes even, give birth in along the way, certainly due to jolts and potholes. Pape Dia and his comrades find it “aberrating” that “the village is surrounded by red basalt quarries, which have made it possible to tar many roads and that Colobane Thiombane cannot benefit from it”. They note that the lack of paved road makes access to the village very difficult, which has today become very isolated, so, they emphasize, “our students, sent to the Lycée de Mont-Rolland, walk several kilometers to return to the village. establishment”.
