In slalom, the only discipline that the Swiss do not dominate, there is better. While Loïc Meillard was practically the only one at the forefront since the start of the season, it seems that Tanguy Nef and Daniel Yule are gaining strength. The Genevan, who finished 5th in Levi, 22nd in Gurgl, then eliminated in Val d’Isère, 22nd in Alta Badia, 15th in Madonna di Campiglio and 8th in Adelboden, took an excellent 4th place in Wengen. The best result of his career.
Starting with bib 20, he signed a breathtaking 1st round to take 3rd place, 0″53 from the lead. He finally fell back one place to only fail 0″04 from the 2nd step of the podium and 0″33 from winning. Alternating between the very good and the less good since the start of the season, he, for the first time in slalom, ranked twice in a row in the top-10. Will consistency finally be there for the Genevan who has the skiing to be in the top-10?
For his part, Daniel Yule is slowly but surely moving up the rankings. Out of the top-10 during his first three slaloms (22nd, 13th and 20th), he only left it once during the last four races (9th, 12th and 7th). Excellent 6th in Wengen, he produced, for the first time this season, two good rounds in a row. Fourth after the first route, 0.67″ behind the provisional leader, the Valaisan certainly fell back two places, but showed that he did not lose his skiing which gave him multiple victories in his favorite discipline.
Finally, for Loïc Meillard, the Wengen slalom was a good contrast. Only 24th after the first round (+1″75), he completed a second fiery route to move up 19 places and rank 5th. The Valaisan, best time of the second round with 0″32 ahead of the second , thus preserved all its chances in the race for the small crystal globe of the specialty. He is, in fact, only 65 points behind Henrik Kristoffersen, 3rd in Wengen.
