This Monday, January 20, Queen Mathilde celebrates her birthday. For the occasion, the Royal Palace is unveiling two new photos.

Mathilde d’Udekem d’Acoz, our dear Queen, celebrates her 52nd birthday this Monday, January 20. For the occasion, the Royal Palace is revealing new photos. It is in a snowy setting, near the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, that the Queen signs these two new portraits.

A Queen’s Life

Born in 1973, Mathilde of Belgium is the daughter of Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz and Countess Anna Maria Komorowska. She is the eldest of five children: Marie-Alix, Elisabeth, Hélène and Charles-Henri. The young woman studied speech therapy in Brussels and obtained her diploma in 1994.

Her life changed when she married Philippe of Belgium, future King of the Belgians, on December 4, 1999. From their love four children were born: Elisabeth (2001), Gabriel (2003), Emmanuel (2005) and Eléonore (2008). Prince Philippe was crowned on July 21, 2013, and Mathilde then officially became Queen of Belgium.

Mathilde of Belgium is involved in numerous humanitarian causes, including children’s rights. She is, for example, the Honorary President of Child Focus and UNICEF Belgium.
