Increase in tax on plane tickets: after applying it, Air reimburses it to its passengers

The airline sector had anticipated… a little quickly. Last fall, when the government planned, in its finance bill for 2025, a tripling of the solidarity tax on plane tickets (TSBA), also called the “Chirac tax”, several companies had decided not to wait and to immediately pass on this future increase. Air , Air Caraibes, French Bee, Corsair and Fly Emirates had, as of October, increased the price of their tickets on departures from January 1, 2025.

At Air France, the calculations carried out were based on the following hypotheses: for domestic flights and in Europe, a tax increasing from 2.63 euros to 9.50 euros for economy class tickets and from 20.27 euros to 30 euros in business class. For flights of less than 5,500 km, a tax increasing from 7.51 euros to 15 euros in economy and from 63.07 euros to 80 euros in business class. Finally, for trips beyond 5,500 km, an increase from 7.51 euros to 40 euros in economy, and from 63.07 euros to 120 euros in business and premiere.

However, in the meantime, censorship by the Barnier government finally made the measure obsolete. The carriers who had increased the price of their tickets therefore undertook to reimburse customers who had paid an excess. “We have reimbursed everyone who requested it and completed the procedures,” Air France said today.

On its website, the company explains that the price of its tickets has returned to its previous level since December 7. “Customers in possession of a ticket purchased between October 24 and December 6, 2024 will be refunded the difference between the amount collected during their reservation and the amount of the 2024 TSBA scale,” she wrote. Requests must be made on the Airfrance.fr website (for customers who have booked directly with the company) or with the travel agency used for the reservation.

A priori, at the start of the year, the French company should not apply new collection in advance, even if the new government has confirmed that it is in favor of the return of the increase in the TSBA.
