Second world championship match: Switzerland narrowly misses the sensation against Germany

Switzerland plays in an inspiring way, but does not look for points.

In a match that could go either way, the Germans had the advantage in the end. Germany created the difference with a series of 5-1 goals in the final minutes. Switzerland dominates the majority of the game, but Germany has Andreas Wolff in goal, who plays an exceptional game.

Unlike its last two games against Germany, Switzerland entered this match perfectly. Felix Aellen starts at playmaker, with Lenny Rubin and Dimitrij Küttel alongside him in the backcourt – a completely different attacking guard to the match against the Czech Republic. On the left wing, Noam Leopold receives the confidence of national coach Andy Schmid.

Rubin was once again in great form, scoring four goals in the opening minutes and was one of the main players in putting Switzerland up 4-2. In defense, the Germans did not find many solutions against Switzerland, but then managed to turn the situation around. But Switzerland fought again before halftime and reduced the score to 14-15.

The national team leaves the locker room motivated. In the 38th minute, she led 21-19. The 300 Swiss supporters who made the trip discovered a team which took matters into its own hands and posed serious problems to its opponent. Only one German does not participate in this Swiss celebration: Andi Wolff makes one save after another and ends up showing 20 saves. It’s no wonder he was voted best player, because without the German goalkeeper the result of this match would have been different.

On the Swiss side, Lenny Rubin (7 goals) once again stands out as top scorer. The defense around head of defense Samuel Röthlisberger was again very well organized and goalkeeper Nikola Portner made 13 saves. As playmaker, Felix Aellen had a solid match.

SITUATION

After two days, there is great suspense in Group A. Especially because the afternoon match between Poland and the Czech Republic ends in another draw. For Switzerland, the starting situation in the fight for participation in the main round is as follows:

  • If the national team wins against Poland on Sunday, it will in any case qualify for the main round.
  • If the national team loses against Poland on Sunday, it will in any case miss the main round.
  • If Switzerland and Poland draw, the big calculation begins. The Swiss, the Poles and the Czechs would then all have drawn in their direct meetings. What matters are the goals scored in these direct encounters. In other words, this means: if the draw is at least 20-20 or more, Switzerland is in the main round — provided the Czech Republic does not make points against Germany.

THEY SAID

Andy Schmid: It’s hard, because what we showed for 60 minutes is sensational. In defense and attack, with many variations. The guys played with heart and courage. In the end, we missed too many balls against one of the best goalkeepers in the world. The will, the team spirit, the fighting spirit, the willingness to suffer – we showed all that.

Noam Leopold: It’s a disappointment. Small details made the difference. It would have been an opportunity to beat this great team and make history.
