A patient from is believed to be in remission from HIV after an allogeneic bone marrow transplant carried out in 2020. This case opens new perspectives for research on the virus.

-

Last July in Munich (Germany), three patients testified about their recovery from AIDS. They had received a stem cell transplant, a new technique bringing hope. It can only be used on patients carrying the virus and suffering from leukemia.

Thus, doctors recommend a bone marrow transplant, selecting a donor who has a genetic mutation with the ability to never contract HIV. It takes a long time for the graft to take hold. The process is not without danger.

In France, a patient treated in Sainte-Marguerite, in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), was reportedly cured using the same transplant method. Details could confirm the effectiveness of the process at the beginning of next week. To defeat AIDS, researchers are interested in gene therapy.
