Mauricie | A man loses his life in a collision on the A55 in Trois-Rivières

(Trois-Rivières) A ​​major collision left one person dead on Friday afternoon on Highway 55 in Trois-Rivières, in Mauricie.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) reports that, around 1:20 p.m., emergency services were dispatched to the scene of a collision between a minivan and a truck at kilometer 183, heading north.

When they arrived on scene, the driver of the minivan, a 92-year-old man, was in serious condition and was evacuated to a hospital center, where he was pronounced dead.

The SQ explains that the nonagenarian, from Trois-Rivières, who was arriving from the Jean-XXIII access ramp, was stopped on the right of the highway, in the right direction, according to the analysis of the scene and the first testimonies. Then, for a reason that remains to be determined, the minivan ended up in the opposite direction of traffic. It was at this moment that the truck, which was pulling a long platform trailer, tried to avoid it without succeeding.

After the impact, the minivan ended up in the middle of the highway and the truck ended up on the left side, in the central reservation.

The driver of the truck, a man in his forties, suffered only minor injuries.

In order to allow investigators to analyze the scene, two of the three lanes of the A55 as well as the access ramp were closed to traffic. The highway was fully reopened around 4 p.m.
