In New Aquitaine, one in three minor children lives in a single-parent or blended family. In Dordogne, we even observe an over-representation of children living in stepfamilies compared to other departments in the region, while there are, for example, more of them living in single-parent families in Charente. INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) managed to establish these figures thanks to a new form of survey, based on the annual population census. A complementary “family” questionnaire was sent for the first time last year to a sample of households representative of the region.

This survey will be repeated this year in 132 municipalities in the region, or 40,000 respondents.

The census is launched, like every year, on the third Thursday of January. It therefore starts today, January 16, and will continue until February 15 or 22, depending on the size of the municipalities. In Dordogne, 99 municipalities will be identified this year, out of the 895 concerned in the region.

Adapted policies

“The objective is to establish the new official populations, for legal and regulatory uses but also to update socio-demographic information”specifies Céline Carton, head of the Population Census division in New Aquitaine. INSEE is pleased with a national response rate of 96%, including 68.5% online in 2024. Everything is done to facilitate this response method: since last year, the online questionnaire has been available on all media, with ergonomics now adapted to smartphones and tablets.

The census not only collects information relating to housing (characteristics, number of occupants, etc.) and the household that occupies it, but also includes an individual part, which concerns each member of the household. Three questions were added this year to this latest bulletin. They concern the use of teleworking, the origin of the parents and a possible disability situation. The data collected makes it possible to measure the situation to establish the policies to apply. “Studying the use of teleworking according to the territories makes it possible to adapt transport offers and infrastructure”notes Cédric Lacour, head of the Census division. The origin of the parents will make it possible to study geographic mobility in an intergenerational manner.
