Opened about fifteen years ago in Cambernon (Manche), near Coutances, the Protégés de la Manche dog shelter will have to close its doors. The announcement was made on the social network Facebook, Tuesday January 14, 2025.

“The shelter will close shortly because it is sold, says Ophélie Gauché, a volunteer. I couldn't find suitable land to set up a shelter. The municipalities that I was able to contact either did not respond or did not have a solution to provide”
No fallback solution
Sylvie Henry opened the establishment in 2011. Ophélie Gauché took over in 2022. But since then, the property on which the refuge was founded has been put up for sale, forcing the latter to find a fallback solution. In order to alert people to this situation, a cani-hike was organized in Gouville-sur-Mer in August 2024.
According to the Facebook post, there are between ten and fifteen dogs left to place. “I already know that it is going to be complicated for the other associations in La Manche because we were full, with waiting lists for support. And there are no other shelters or SPAs within 50 km. For several months, I have made some very nice family dog placements and almost stopped taking in new dogs. So there aren't many dogs left and I'm going to find a solution for each of them. »

Three solutions for animals
The volunteer continues: “There are three possible solutions: adoption, a place in a foster family so that some care can continue and the last solution a place in another association, either a shelter/SPA or an association with foster families. welcome for certain dogs who need it so much. »
Contacted several times on Wednesday January 15, 2025, the Protégés de la Manche team has so far not responded to requests from West France.
