Measles, commonly known as Bouhamroun“, continues to cause concern in Tangier. Cases of infection have been reported in several educational establishments, placing the provincial directorate of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports of Tangier-Asilah on alert. Faced with this situation, the authorities have strengthened preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus.
Starting this Wednesday, the education department deployed a vast awareness campaign targeting parents and guardians of students. This initiative aims to encourage them to check the vaccination status of their children and to complete the missing doses for those who have not received a full vaccination. This campaign is being carried out in close collaboration with the services of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
According to official data collected by Hespressaround 15 of the approximately 400 public and private schools in Tangier have recorded cases of measles, including private schools. The total number of confirmed cases in the city’s schools stands at 75. Some affected students have already recovered and been able to return to classes. A management official reassured that the situation remains “ normal and presents no cause for concern« .
Concerning serious cases, the same source, on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death of a student suffering from chronic diabetes, victim of measles. No other deaths were recorded.
In this sense, the Tangier-Asilah prefecture organized a meeting the previous week with the heads of various institutions in order to assess the epidemiological situation and define strategies to curb the spread of the disease. The manager specifies that the 75 cases identified among the 319,000 students attending school in the region remain “ very weak and do not give rise to any fear« .
This local context is part of a more alarming national situation. Since October 2023, Morocco has recorded 107 deaths linked to measles, half of which concern children under 12 years old. Additionally, more than 20,000 confirmed cases have been reported nationwide.
