European Parliament: the swan song of the Polisario relayed by the far left

November 12, 2024 marked the end of the existence of the “Western Sahara” intergroup which had been active in the European Parliament for twenty years, despite its numerous violations of the institution’s regulations. That day, the Algiers regime and the Polisario had lost an important platform for their anti-Moroccan propaganda and for the implementation of devious diplomatic stratagems, relayed within the framework of this intergroup by MEPs devoted to their cause.

But while the door of the European Parliament closed, leaving their dirty maneuvers in the cold, it was through the window that members of the Polisario were invited to enter by MEPs from The Left group.

Thierry Mariani, French MEP from the Patriots for Europe (National Rally) group, denounced on January 14, on his account Xthe holding of a meeting in the European Parliament, scheduled for January 28, at the initiative of the far left. “Behind closed doors in Brussels, the far left invites the Polisario Front, a pro-Algerian separatist militia (not recognized by the UN), to speak to MEPs. And this in total disregard for the sovereignty of Morocco, the diplomacy of our member states and political realities», Wrote the European representative while sharing the agenda of this meeting.

On the program for this meeting of the foreign trade committee: “An exchange of views with representatives of the Polisario Front on the judgments of the Court of Justice, dated October 4, 2024, regarding the implementation in Western Sahara of the Europe-Morocco agreements relating to fisheries, trade in products agricultural and fishing, and the labeling of products originating from Western Sahara».

Asked by Le360Thierry Mariani believes that “this is politically shocking, but technically possible, because in reality, the monitoring group is what follows the trade agreements“. The extreme lefttherefore has the right to invite whoever she wants“, he explains.

But in this meeting with a more symbolic than concrete dimension, Thierry Mariani sees “a sort of last stand of the Polisario which, no longer having an intergroup on Western Sahara, lost the means to intervene for five years».

Thus, he analyzes, the separatists “are trying to be present through this commission“, which, by definition, will not have “not much impact, since it will take place behind closed doors,” nuance Thierry Mariani, who announces for Le360 his presence within the framework of this commission, of which his group is a member, in order to ask “that Morocco be summoned for a separate meeting».
