Morocco records record apple imports in 2024

The Moroccan market for imported apples had an exceptional year. According to a report published by EastFruit, Morocco imported 9.3 thousand tons of apples between January and October 2024, for a value of more than 65 million dollars. This figure represents a historic record since 2011.

Over the last five years, apple import volumes have seen an almost annual increase, with the exception of 2023 where a slight decline was recorded. Compared to 2020, apple imports to Morocco in 2024 increased by almost 50%.

Although Morocco is notable for its ability to produce apples locally, the fruit is not traditionally associated with Africa. In 2022, Morocco was the second largest apple producer in Africa, behind South Africa. However, imports peak in spring and summer, periods when stocks from the previous year’s local harvest are exhausted.

A preference for global varieties

Moroccan consumers are showing increasing interest in international apple varieties such as ‘Gala Royal’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Fuji’, ‘Golden Smoothie’, ‘Ozark Gold’, ‘Anna’ and ‘Starking Delicious’. However, local varieties continue to retain an important place on the market.

Apples imported into Morocco mainly come from European countries. Italy is the main supplier, accounting for 46% of imports between January and October 2024. It is followed by Spain (27%) and Poland (13%). Compared to the previous year, Italian and Spanish exports to Morocco increased, while those from Poland and Portugal decreased. In all, thirteen countries exported apples to Morocco in 2024.

Growing Moroccan production

At the same time, Morocco continues to develop its apple exports, particularly to neighboring countries and other regions of Africa. The increasing quality of Moroccan apples, combined with an increase in volumes produced, is helping to strengthen the country’s position on international markets. Although exports remain marginal compared to imports, they represent a strategic opportunity for the future.
