In 2007, the year when statistics on this subject were launched, there were 38,756 cross-border workers employed in Belgium and residing abroad. This figure has increased from year to year, reaching 52,815 workers in 2023. But this constant growth is now interrupted, since in 2024 there were no longer 51,581.
The majority of cross-border workers still come from France, but their number has decreased slightly, reaching 39,252 last year. Next come residents of the Netherlands, whose number has already been decreasing since 2022, as well as that of cross-border commuters from Germany or Luxembourg.
The number of these outgoing workers has also been declining in recent years. It rose to 91,296 in 2019, before falling in subsequent years. In 2024, there were 86,056.
