Liberal Party of Canada | Steven MacKinnon’s turn to decline

(Ottawa) Minister Steven MacKinnon will not enter the race to succeed the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (PLC) and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He talks about the lack of time in a publication on X Sunday morning.

“The leadership race must include diverse, experienced and pragmatic voices, in French and English. I believe I am one of those voices. Unfortunately, the time available does not allow me to mount the kind of campaign I would have liked to lead,” he said.

The choice of the next Liberal leader will be made with an extremely tight deadline. Interested parties have until January 23 to formalize their application. This leaves them two weeks to organize themselves and gauge their support. The entry fee was set at $350,000.

Steven MacKinnon is the Member of Parliament for Gatineau and Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour. He had signaled his interest in the leadership race on Wednesday, two days after the announcement of Prime Minister Trudeau’s resignation.

He is the fourth to take his turn after ministers Dominic LeBlanc, Mélanie Joly and Anita Anand.
