And four! Marco Odermatt won for the fourth consecutive time in the Adelboden giant slalom on Sunday, equaling a record set by Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark. Third in the first round, the 27-year-old Nidwalden, the undisputed best skier of his generation, signed an impeccable second pass to beat his friend and rival Loïc Meillard, who had been the fastest in the morning. The Valais native of Neuchâtel origin failed at 0”20, in front of a delirious crowd. The Italian Luca De Aliprandini took third place and the Swiss Thomas Tumler fourth.
Luca Aerni, for his part, achieved a superb performance by placing 16th, his second best result in a giant after his fourth place in December in Val d’Isère. Long confined to slalom, the Valais native of Berne asserts himself in the second discipline that he sought to add to his long-standing program. He also had the pleasure of taking the lead after his second stint, enjoying an obviously delirious ovation from the Oberland public.
Incidentally, let us point out that the organizers succeeded in their weather bet. This week they made the decision to reverse the giant and slalom due to the snow forecast on Saturday, less disruptive for the slalom racers, in the hope that both races could take place. On Sunday, the giants were able to take advantage of generous sunshine to put on a show on the Chuenisbärgli.
