On the occasion of the “one million candles” solidarity action, Caritas lit 1000 candles on Saturday evening on the Federal Square in Bern. This operation aims to remind people that in Switzerland many people still live in poverty.

(Keystone-ATS) Some 800 people took part in this demonstration, Caritas Berne said in a press release. Each candle represents a symbol of hope and solidarity. “With this action we want to show that no one is alone,” explained Silja Wenk, from the NGO.
This demonstration of solidarity takes place each year in more than a hundred locations in Switzerland. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 702,000 people are affected by poverty in Switzerland. And almost as many of them live with the minimum subsistence level.
