Coming from all over Switzerland, 550 gymnasts impressed the public at the Vaudoise Aréna on Saturday during the Gymotion. Given in two performances, the largest gymnastics show in Switzerland also served as a prelude to the Federal Festival which will take place in June in Lausanne.
The Gymotion represents a unique showcase for these gymnasts and allows them to reveal all the facets of their sport. It’s also a special moment, a show where anything goes. “There is not this competitive side where we have to be square and not do too much. There, we can let go,” explains Saturday in the 7:30 p.m. Jodie Brocard, from the Amis-Gym club in Yverdon- les-Bains.
Jérôme Hübscher, Gymotion’s production manager, highlights the logistical challenge that this “modern” show represents.
“There are a lot of gymnasts, musicians and logistical staff. You have to keep them running like little cogs in a watch,” he says.
A first in Romandy
The previous editions of the biennial event, eight in total, were all held at the Hallenstadion in Zurich.
This first in French-speaking Switzerland had a foretaste of a Federal Gymnastics Festival. Indeed, Saturday’s gala served as a prelude to the great rally of these disciplines. Organized every six years, it will take place this year in Lausanne, from June 12 to 22. The Vaud capital expects to welcome 70,000 gymnasts and 300,000 visitors.
“We are lucky that this time this is happening in Romandie. This will perhaps also allow public and political authorities to provide more resources [à la gymnastique] and to allow young people to enter”, maintains Myriam Laala, the instructor of the Welsch Master Team.
