Two trams collided in the tunnel leading to the stop serving Strasbourg station (Bas-Rhin), Saturday January 11 in the afternoon, announced the department prefecture. The accident caused at least one “fifty” injured in relative urgency, according to the director of the fire and rescue services of Bas-Rhin, René Cellier, who mentions in particular “scalp wounds”, “collarbone fracture” or even “a sprained knee”. Among these injured, “a little half were transported to hospitals.”
This “collision brutal” did not cause any deaths and none of the injured are in absolute emergency, declared the mayor of Strasbourg, Jeanne Barseghian, during a press briefing. The elected official mentioned a “frontal impact following a reversing of a tram”. “Today, we do not know what caused this backward movement of the tram”she continued. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of this accident. The two tram drivers were not “physically injured”, but are “extremely shocked”according to the general director of the city’s transport company, CTS, Emmanuel Auneau.
The Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service adds on “many ways” firefighters are on site. To facilitate access for emergency services, it is advisable to avoid the areas around Place des Halles, the train station and Boulevard du Président Wilson. Tram traffic is interrupted on lines A and D, according to the CTS.
