Following a road check, his luxury car is seized: a motorist demands several million euros from the Antwerp police

One evening in September 2024, a businessman was stopped by the police in Antwerp. Testing positive for drugs, his luxury car was confiscated. The latter disputes and demands a large sum of money.

A businessman is demanding 4.7 million euros in damages from the Antwerp police, report our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN). The reason: a traffic stop which, according to him, would have been abusive.

A Lamborghini seized in the middle of the night

It all starts on September 21, 2024, near Place Marnix in Antwerp. That evening, the police intercepted this driver of a luxury car for “nocturnal noise and inappropriate conduct”. The man was stopped and accused of driving under the influence of several drugs. His road tax not being in order, his vehicle was towed.

But for the driver, this control would be an injustice. “I was treated very aggressively by these inspectors, because they wanted to tow my Lamborghini at all costs”he protested to HLN. He claims to have been held for several hours by the agents.

Tests criticized

The saliva test that the businessman underwent, supposed to prove his drug use, was allegedly biased. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke cigarettes and I never take drugs. But this inspector stuck a cotton swab in my mouth for a few seconds and right after said I tested positive for cocaine, amphetamines, cannabis and other drugs.”he says.

On the advice of his lawyer, he went to the hospital to take a urine test. “I was negative across the board,” he says.

Convinced of having been the victim of an abuse of power, the driver filed a complaint against the local and federal police, while alerting the mayor Bart De Wever, the governor of the province and the Committee P.

Meanwhile, the businessman is demanding substantial compensation: 4.7 million euros for the moral and material damage suffered.

An internal investigation was entrusted to the Antwerp police chief. For its part, Committee P promises to follow the matter closely.
