Project data and activities promoting conscious consumption of fruits and vegetables.
TORONTO, January 10, 2025 /CNW/ — Official statistics from UN COMTRADE reveal that Canadian imports of Italian fruits and vegetables had reached 27 million euros by the end of 2023. This represents a growth of 5.8% compared to 2022, for a additional amount of 1.5 million euros. While the first nine months of 2024 showed a slight decline from 11 million euros to 10.7 million euros compared to 2023, projections suggest the year-end total could reach around 26,000 euros. 1 million euros. This data comes from the I Love Fruit & Veg project from Europeco-financed by the European Commission and supported by the producer organizations Agritalia, AOA, La Deliziosa, Meridia and Terra Orti. The project promotes the conscious purchase and consumption of quality European fruits and vegetables, and advocates for healthier, safer and more sustainable food choices.
Italy’s global fruit and vegetable exports reached 5.67 billion euros in 2023, representing an increase of 444 million euros compared to 2022. This includes 3.81 billion euros of fruit exports (2.47 million tonnes) and 1.86 billion euros in vegetable exports (988,000 tonnes). In the first nine months of 2024, global exports reached €3.6 billion, down slightly from €3.9 billion in the same period in 2023.
The director of Terra Orti, Emilio Ferraranotes: “One of the reasons for this growth in exports is reputation. “Italian products are widely perceived as being the safest in the world.Europeand European products are the safest in the world.”
Le projet I Love Fruit & Veg from Europe highlights this growth. Strong EU performance saw fruit and vegetable exports rise from €48.6 billion in 2022 to €52.8 billion in 2023 (+8.6%), with Italy contributing to this total of 5.67 billion euros.
“In Canada and many other countries, we are seeing a shift toward conscious consumption of fruits and vegetables,” explains Gennaro Velardodirector of the AOA. Consumers consider not only the price and quality of fruits and vegetables, but also their environmental impact and health benefits. The cornerstone of the I Love Fruit & Veg project from Europe is the focus on consumer health and well-being, in response to the growing appreciation of seasonal European fruits and vegetables, and particularly Italian produce, which is reflected in consumer purchasing trends.”
