On January 7, 2025, the United States officially handed over to the Senegalese National Gendarmerie a set of modern equipment to strengthen border surveillance and security. This equipment, including night vision goggles, GPS devices, helmets, ballistic shields and essential medical equipment, aims to improve the operational capabilities of the Senegalese security forces.
Worth more than 750,000 US dollars, or more than 450 million CFA francs, this donation constitutes a significant step forward for the Gendarmerie. The handover ceremony took place at the Thiès Regional Tactical Training Center, in the presence of Senegalese and American officials, highlighting the United States’ commitment to the security and stability of Senegal.
Long-term cooperation for regional security
This donation is part of a four-year cooperation program between the two nations, aimed at strengthening the capacities of the National Gendarmerie to detect and counter cross-border threats. By targeting illicit trafficking, such as drugs, weapons or human beings, this initiative also contributes to regional security. The partnership includes joint training and resource sharing, thereby consolidating bilateral relations.
Support welcomed by both parties
During the ceremony, the United States Ambassador to Senegal, Michael Raynor, said:
“The United States is honored to support Senegal’s efforts to protect its borders. By providing modern, high-quality equipment, we strengthen the operational capabilities of the National Gendarmerie. This ongoing partnership illustrates our unwavering commitment to the security and well-being of the Senegalese people. »
