In preparation for major sporting events such as the 2025 African Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup, the city of Tangier is embarking on an ambitious modernization of its infrastructure. At the heart of these initiatives is a strategic project aimed at regulating traffic on several roads through the installation of intelligent cameras.
This project, carried out under the supervision of the region’s wilaya, is based on an in-depth study carried out by the international company Lacroix. During 85 days of field analysis last summer, this company collected valuable data using advanced technological tools. These statistics revealed impressive traffic flows, such as 9,120 vehicles per hour at the Riad Tétouan roundabout during peak periods, 8,200 vehicles at the airport zone roundabout, and 5,600 at the Trial Atlas-Avenue Moulay Rachid roundabout. .
In a first phase, latest generation traffic lights were deployed on 34 road crossings and 17 pedestrian crossings. Local authorities have also expanded the use of connected cameras to optimize traffic management. Connected to the wireless network via WiMAX technology, these cameras record traffic violations automatically, without human intervention, and transmit the information directly to the control room located at the police headquarters.
In addition to their role in monitoring, this equipment uses artificial intelligence to adjust traffic lights in real time, thus considerably improving traffic flow. This innovative system demonstrates a desire to make traffic more efficient and prepare the city to host international events.
With this technological transformation, Tangier is positioning itself as a model of modern urban management, adapting to growing mobility and road safety requirements.
