Unusual or tragic, a look back at the highlights of 2024 in Dordogne

2025 has just begun. The past year was marked by a succession of news events. Some make you smile, others are dramatic. What caught the attention of “Sud Ouest” readers? We have taken the most read articles on our website to offer this selection.

Natural disaster. On February 2, huge blocks of stone fell on a road in Excideuil. The water and electricity were cut off for several residents, but above all everyone heaved a sigh of relief, because no one was found under the tons of rocks, on the departmental 76. The owner of the plot where the collapse took place will have to reimburse 400,000 euros of work, advanced by the communities, for the clearance which took place in July.

The D 76 was cut short, at Excideuil, after this landslide in February.

A corpse in the cellar. This is a criminal case that stunned the Périgourdins. At the beginning of January, the ballet of investigators in white coats disturbed the tranquility of Négrondes. The body of Jean-Louis Tétard was discovered in a house on the church square. The corpse of the octogenarian was taken out of a cistern, located below the dining room of the neighbor's house. The latter was indicted for murder. The thirty-year-old reportedly explained that she was the victim of an attempted sexual assault by her neighbor. Things would have gotten out of hand. The investigation continues.

Animals. In January, firefighters intervened on a balcony in Périgueux to save a freezing puppy, abandoned there by its owner. Finally, it was a police officer from the police station who adopted the Malinois, then 6 months old.

Another moving animal case: in December, a horse found itself in a swimming pool in Mareuil-en-Périgord. He was frozen, but the firefighters managed to guide him to the stairs.

In Mareuil-en-Périgord, emergency services were supported by the owner of this swimming pool.

Records on the roads. This is certainly one of the biggest peaks of speed recorded in the Dordogne this year. The driver of a new Mercedes E class was tested at 217 km/h, in Saint-Antoine-de-Breuilh, in February. He was traveling on the D 936, a two-lane road limited to 110 km/h. Results: 1,500 euros fine and confiscation of the vehicle.

Blood alcohol record this time: in June, a man caused a road accident in Terrasson-Lavilledieu, while he was driving without a license and with 3.27 g of alcohol per liter of blood.

Controversy. One of the most commented topics on our social networks in 2024 relates to a societal issue. A nightclub in Périgueux had planned an evening with a stripper in April. But the man chose a minor for a tight, naked dance, during which he made her drink alcohol from a bottle. Some were shocked by the photos, others point out that the teenager consented.

This photo was shared on social networks by people denouncing the fact that a minor was participating in a go-go dancing show and that she was being given alcohol.

Fraud. Some offenders are particularly cunning. Demonstration with this 27-year-old Périgourdine, arrested on February 22 after having ordered parcels worth 13,000 euros, paying for them with bank details that were not hers. Conducting their investigation, the police ended up catching the young woman in the act while receiving yet another order, in Coulounieix-Chamiers. She resold the proceeds of her thefts (cosmetics, jewelry, candles, watches, sunglasses) on social networks to, she said, “repay debts” and afford “a better quality of life”.

Unusual. Finally, there are unclassifiable news items. Battles raged in February in Ribérac. A couple, who wanted to sell a house, were emptying the cupboards. It was there that they found a vial, bearing a label on which the word “radium” was written. Good reflex: emergency services are called. The Nuclear Safety Agency intervenes. She condemns the premises and carries out contamination tests. Luckily, the incident did not cause any casualties.

Another unpleasant surprise for this resident of Léguillac-de-l'Auche. In January, he had the unpleasant surprise of finding, in an apple pie bought at Leclerc in Saint-Astier, an orange pen filled with ink. Pasquier and the supermarket declined all responsibility.

It caused many victims. The “chainsaw gang” was arrested. The Briconautes of Montignac-Lascaux was robbed in February. But the tools were equipped with GPS beacons, which allowed the arrest of nine people in in March for 13 burglaries. The total damage amounts to several tens of thousands of euros.
