Three men were arrested at the beginning of December 2024 for tens burglaries that have occurred since the summer in businesses and homes of Hauts-de-France, for total damage estimated at more than 300,000 euros, the national gendarmerie told AFP on Monday.
They are suspected of belonging to a network involved in a series of night raids in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais during which “the tobacco bars are particularly targeted“, underlines the gendarmerie in a press release. ” Of the cigarette cartons as well as numerary are stolen,” she adds.
Around fifteen journeys in Hauts-de-France
“In total, around fifteen trips were recorded, during which 20 vehicle thefts and fires were committed, ten businesses were robbed and twelve main residence burglaries were noted, for a total damage greater than 300,000 euros“, details the press release.
The investigation, carried out by the Lille research section and the Nord departmental gendarmerie group, established “that these acts were committed by an active team around a core of two individuals from the traveler community“, the press release continues. The latter two are among those arrested.
The supposed members of the network, “particularly experienced, very unfavorably known to the justice system”, are increasing “security measures to thwart police surveillance”.
According to the gendarmerie, they are suspected of having carried out these night raids using so-called “war” vehiclesname used to designate vehicles often with large engine capacity, stolen from private homes, used for a raid then set on fire.
The three suspects were arrested and placed in police custody during a legal operation launched on December 10, after a “new journey of burglaries committed in the Somme”, specifies the gendarmerie.
According to a source close to the matter, the two alleged leaders of the network were born in 2002 and 2006.
These two main defendants “will be judged on February 6 by the Cambrai judicial court”, and the third will appear “upon prior recognition of guilt on April 28” before the same court, indicates the gendarmerie.
