Wild boars are increasingly causing crop damage and road accidents. Many raids are organized, such as that of December 15 on the A20, which was temporarily closed near Razès. Eight wild boars were killed. In Haute-Vienne as in France, the figures, given by hunters, have exploded.
“The beats are every weekend. The quantities of animals are quite large, especially this year when there are a lot of wild boars, indicates Edmond Lamy de La Chapelle, administrator of the Haute-Vienne hunting federation and president of the ACCA of Saint-Martin-Teressus . We are at 1,000 more wild boars killed than last year at the same time. There is damage, but the hunters are making an effort to collect as much as possible so as not to have as much damage as last year. »
6,700 wild boars slaughtered in Haute-Vienne in 2023-2024
In Limousin, in 2023-2024, we slaughtered 6,700 wild boars in Haute-Vienne, 6,500 in Corrèze and 5,600 in Creuse. Over the 2022-2023 hunting period, the three departments in which the greatest number of wild boars were killed are Gard (more than 30,000), Loir-et-Cher and Hérault. Nearly 800,000 wild boars were slaughtered in France in 2023-2024, compared to 36,429 in 1975.
Nearly 7,000 hunters validate their license each year in Haute-Vienne. In 2013, Haute-Vienne launched the €0 hunting license operation. Many federations followed his example throughout France. “Thanks to this 0 euro license with a year of free hunting, it makes it possible to maintain a correct number of hunters,” says Edmond Lamy of La Chapelle.
The zero euro license has made it possible to attract new hunters, but hunting is often a passion which sometimes arouses incomprehension, even hostility. “Hunting is a passion, but what non-hunters don’t know is that we also have obligations,” recalls Patrick Peynoche, secretary of the ACCA of Razès and administrator of the hunting federation. of Haute-Vienne. Hunting plans (deer, roe deer, etc.) and management plans (wild boars) are thus planned to harvest a certain number of animals.
“Usually, the killed game is shared between the hunters, but also with the owners of land on which the hunters hunt, the farmers…” explains Edmond Lamy of La Chapelle. The eight wild boars from the December 15 hunt were donated to the Food Bank, along with other game, i.e. 800 kg of meat. In this operation, “everyone wanted to show solidarity,” say Patrick Peynoche and Edmond Lamy of La Chapelle.
