This is an underlying trend which continues to be confirmed by INSEE figures for the Centre-Val de Loire region. According to official population figures for 2022, the Touraine metropolis continues to gain residents. In 2022, the metropolis had 299,019 inhabitants, just over 10,000 more than in 2011 when the population was 288,134 inhabitants.
Tours progresses
How can this growth be explained? Two factors come into play: the so-called “natural” balance (1) and the “migratory balance” (2). These two indicators both increased by 0.2% between 2016 and 2022, a sign of demographic dynamism and territorial attractiveness.
In detail, Tours remains the most populous city in the department and the metropolis with 138,668 inhabitants (134,633 in 2011). A figure which is increasing thanks in particular to a positive natural balance (0.3%).
Overall, it is the municipalities around the central city that are making progress. Joué-lès-Tours, the second town in the department with its 38,432 inhabitants, saw its population increase by 0.4%. In addition to the natural growth of the population, the demographics are dynamic thanks to a positive migratory balance.
The most…
In the metropolis, the third most populated municipality is Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire with 16,766 inhabitants, followed by Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (15,698 Corpopétrussiens) and Saint-Avertin. With 15,075 Saint-Avertinois, the latter has also exceeded the threshold of 15,000 inhabitants in 2022 (there were 14,461 in 2011).
The strongest population growth is located in the north of the metropolis, in Parçay-Meslay. On average, between 2016 and 2022, the town sees its number of inhabitants increase by 2% per year, bringing the number of Parcillons to 2,574 in 2022. Right next door, Notre-Dame-d'Oé, from 2016 to 2022, sees its population increase annually by 1.1% to reach 4,358 inhabitants.
Among the astonishing figures, Druye sees its counter stuck at 999 inhabitants. The municipality, whose annual increase is 0.6%, should however exceed 1,000 inhabitants during the next census.
And the least
Among those who are declining, Saint-Genouph is the municipality whose dynamics are the least favorable. With -0.6% per year from 2016 to 2022, Saint-Genouph remains just above 1,000 inhabitants in 2022. A negative dynamic also for Saint-Pierre-des-Corps (-0.2% per year between 2016 and 2022) and La Membrolle-sur-Choisille (-0.3% per year between 2016 and 2022).
