The day after Christmas Eve, the inhabitants of Marseille discovered a lot of waste overflowing from the bins this Wednesday, December 25. An almost usual situation which no longer surprises them.
A bad habit. Torn wrapping paper, leftovers from the meal, boxes of toys… Waste of all kinds overflows from the bins and litters the ground in certain Marseille streets this Wednesday, December 25.
If the holiday season is synonymous with human warmth and sharing, it is also a source of waste: almost 20% more packaging is thrown away at the end of the year.
“No real difference from a normal day”
In recent months, the people of Marseillais have had time to get used to the piles of garbage bags that invade the neighborhoods: between September and October, tons of waste stagnated in the city and in the stations, due to strike movements of garbage collectors and cleaning agents.
This Wednesday morning, the residents of the 5th arrondissement were not particularly shocked when they were confronted with the overflowing trash cans.
“It's overflowing but it's always like that in fact… There's no real difference from a normal day,” Emmanuelle quips at the microphone of BFM Marseille Provence. An analysis shared by Antoine, a teacher living in the Camas district.
“The problem is that it’s not just the day after New Year’s Eve, it’s almost all the time. In any case very regularly and too frequently,” he explains.
Antoine would like “more trash cans” to be made available to local residents. He also hopes that the latter will “show a little more civic-mindedness, by putting the garbage in the dumpsters”.
Collection resumes this Thursday
“It’s a mess, a mess everywhere” summarizes Mounir, who also lives in the neighborhood and who has become accustomed to discovering “rubbish presents, clothes on the ground” on Christmas mornings.
The Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis, in charge of waste collection, reminded that “there will be no collection on December 25 and January 1”.
“This is why the metropolis has planned early collection before and after these dates to maintain cleanliness and effectively manage increased waste flows,” assured the community.
To avoid clogging up the bins during a public holiday, it is advisable, if possible, to wait a day to throw away your waste. Collection will resume normally this Thursday, December 26.
