the Parilly park will increase by 3,000 trees this winter

Very damaged by the passage of storm Bert on November 25, the Parilly park in the metropolis of Lyon will benefit from the planting of 3,000 trees and shrubs this winter.

This winter, the metropolis of Lyon intends to plant 3,000 trees and shrubs in the Parilly sports park plain in Vénissieux.

This vast planting project has several objectives. First, it is a question of repairing the damage caused by the devastating passage of storm Bert on November 25. During this violent weather episode, nearly 310 trees fell.

“We are currently working to see how we will be able to replace the trees which have fallen in the clearings in order to reconstitute a wooded state and then, irregularize the heritage a little since we have trees which have to almost all the same ages and the same size”, explains Philippe Moussière, director of plant heritage at the Métropole de Lyon at the microphone of BFM Lyon.

Havens for insects

This wooded redevelopment aims to create windbreaks, shade areas but also to anticipate climate change.

“The objective is to prepare for future climatic events. We are thinking about wind storms, rainfall, high heat and we will try to work on plant diversity so as to have several species, which will resist differently and which will also provide refuge for animals, insects and in particular pollinating insects”, he adds.

The metropolis uses this park as a laboratory for biodiversity and natural resource management practices. Already during the winter 2024 replanting campaign, the community's gardeners have planted honeylocusts, dogwoods, arbutus trees and Montpellier maples. They also created dry hedges.
