The Senegalese Prime Minister signed a circular imposing new vehicle control measures and strengthening sanctions for road offenses, pending the conclusions of the States General of Transport.
The Senegalese government is strengthening road safety measures with a series of new provisions with immediate application, according to a circular signed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Among the key measures is the compulsory registration of all motorcycles over 49cc, accompanied by a free period of three months for the regularization of two-wheelers already in circulation.
The text also provides for tougher controls on heavy goods vehicles, with a maximum tolerance of 15% on authorized loads and a height limit of 4.5 meters. Platforms generating more than 100,000 tonnes of annual freight will have to be equipped with weighbridges.
To combat road insecurity, the authorities have also decided to reactivate the regional driving license withdrawal commissions. The Defense and Security Forces must systematically transmit offenders’ permits to them.
These provisions are part of the States General of Public Transport, launched in May 2024 to reform the sector. The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport will have to present a monthly report on the application of these measures.
