The European Metropolis of Lille (North) has just announced the acquisition of 15 new metro trains. Objective stated “a full operation of metro line 1 in 52 meters”. Explanations.

Why these 15 new metro trains in Lille?

“Currently, the rolling stock of the metro of the public transport network of the European Metropolis of Lille is made up of 143 trainsets of three different generations,” explains the community. It is as part of the modernization of the metro and in preparation for the doubling of trains on line 1 that the Metropolis plans to acquire these 15 additional 52-meter trains, “in order to guarantee complete operation of this line with this type of material”.

A contract for a total amount of €209,970,000 excluding tax is awarded to the company Alstom, including the acquisition of 15 trainsets and associated services.

As part of the project to double the metro trains on line 1, 27 trains of 52 meters in boa configuration, with automatic piloting, must be put into service from 2026.

At the same time, the retirement of the oldest trainsets will take place gradually between the beginning of 2026 and the end of 2030.

It is in view of this schedule that the European Metropolis of Lille has chosen to acquire the 15 new trainsets.
