PAris is losing momentum, is on the verge of becoming the third city in … The coastline, whether Atlantic or Mediterranean, and the regional metropolises of , Toulouse, or constitute the main areas of demographic growth, reveals the latest INSEE demographic report. According to this study, published on December 19, is the only large city in France to see its population decline since 2012. A phenomenon which has even increased since 2016.

According to the statistics institute, Paris and are among the municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants which are experiencing a relative decline in their population, with respectively an average loss of 0.59% and 0.63% per year since 2016. Paris is also the only Ile-de-France department to lose inhabitants. Conversely, Montpellier, or Toulouse are attracting more and more residents. The Pink City has gained around 5,000 inhabitants (+ 1.2%) per year since 2016 and could exceed the demographics of , the third largest city in France behind and Paris. According to the study, there is less than 10,000 inhabitants difference between Lyon and Toulouse. With just over 6 million inhabitants, is the fourth most populous region in the country.

Nantes and attract

Coastal towns are also those experiencing strong population growth. On the Mediterranean coast, Montpellier is very attractive, with an annual increase in its population of around 1.45%. The city of Nice also continues to attract residents (+ 0.53%).

On the Atlantic side, Nantes has seen its population increase by 0.97% on average per year since 2016, and is placed in the top 10 of the most populous large cities in France. More generally, the -Atlantique department has an increase of more than 1%.
