After environmental activist Paul Watson whose release was welcomed on Tuesday December 17the City of Valencia (Drome) intends to lead another fight, always symbolic. Since Monday, December 23, the portrait of Boualem Sansal is displayed on the facade of town hall, “until its release”, announces the municipality in a press release.
In the frame of the Valencia Book Fairwhich took place on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November 2024, at the Palais des Congrès et des Expositions Jacques-Chirac, Valence had the honor of welcoming the Franco-Algerian writer for the presentation of his latest work, French, let’s talk about it! (Editions du Cerf).
A life sentence?
A few days later, Saturday November 16, Boualem Sansal was arrested at Algiers airport. Since then, he has been held incommunicado, without being able to benefit from the assistance of his lawyer, to whom access has been refused.
Aged 75 et in fragile healthBoualem Sansal faces serious charges of “undermining the integrity of the territory”, which could result in a life sentence.
“Author of a major literary work, recognized for its depth and commitment, Boualem Sansal is an essential figure in the fight against religious fundamentalism et authoritarian excesses. It embodies humanist and universal values that transcend borders,” continues the City.
This incarceration arouses immense emotion and legitimate indignation. Through this injustice, our fundamental values – freedom of expression, artistic freedom and republican principles – are also threatened.
The City of Valence calls “for the immediate and unconditional release of Boualem Sansal and reaffirms its deep commitment to the defense of fundamental freedoms and the protection of artists, whose voice is essential to defend our democratic principles and our common values”.
As a sign of support, the portrait of Boualem Sansal is therefore displayed on the facade of the town hall of Valencia until his release.
