Snow disrupts road and rail traffic in Switzerland

The 2 x Christmas action is relaunched from December 24 to January 18. The population is invited to prepare a package of non-perishable foods or hygiene items for people affected by poverty. Cash donations finance projects abroad.

The Swiss Post will receive “2 x Christmas” packages free of charge, the Swiss Red Cross said. This solidarity action is organized jointly by the SSR, Swiss Post, Coop and the Red Cross. The essential items collected will be distributed throughout the country by the Red Cross.

The following products are in particular demand: rice, canned goods and jars, muesli, jam and spread, baby food, coffee, dry food, flour and pasta. Food must have a shelf life of at least six months.

Hygiene products, including menstrual protection, cotton wool and tissues, as well as baby items such as diapers, care oil and wet wipes are also welcome. It is also possible to buy ready-made packages in certain Coop stores.

As for cash donations, they are allocated to winter relief projects in Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova. In Switzerland, 702,000 people are affected by poverty.

Last year, the operation made it possible to redistribute 317 tonnes of food and hygiene products in Switzerland, and to allocate 285,000 francs to winter relief projects in Eastern Europe and in Central Asia. In total, more than 50,000 people were able to benefit from the action, in Switzerland and abroad.
