“And if the CO₂this gas often referred to as the number one enemy of the climatewas becoming a valuable resource for building the energy future? », asks éMa, greentech Montpellier specialized in the treatment of CO₂, whose global emissions have once again reached record levels in 2022, i.e. 36.8 billion tonnes according to the International Energy Agency.
Actor in the energy transition
In this context, assures éMa, the industries are looking for solutions to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising their competitiveness. “The transformation of industrial emissions into green energy stands out as an innovative avenue, but few players succeed to combine technological efficiency and economic viability », recalls the start-up which dreams of becoming a major player in the energy transition with an innovation that reduces CO₂ emissions while creating new energy resources.

éMa has developed in Montpellier a patented technology based on electro-catalysis : an electro-catalyst captures CO₂ straight to the source to transform it into biomethane thanks to the hydrogen which is formed within the reactor by electrolysis of water… To develop and market this process, éMa has just successfully completed a capital increase of €800,000 “in order to allow investors to participate in a meaningful and impactful approach, which combines scientific innovation and an economic model accessible to all”.
Valuing and producing energy
This process is primarily intended for heavy industries which will be able to produce biogas from methanization installations, transforming CO₂ into biomethane “In the absence of injection of CO₂ or Biogas, the reactor provides hydrogen : two productions of green energy are therefore possible”, specifies éMa which promises “one valuation CO₂ emissions in a single reactor, limiting costs of energy production”. With this innovation, the cost price of biomethane increases from €2000 per tonne to €1300.
Pilot projects funded
“By capturing CO₂ directly at the source, éMa offers an ecological alternative and economically viable to industries under pressure from new environmental regulations”, adds éMa which specifies that the fundraising will notably allow to deploy pilot projectsincluding Solarvi 2, in collaboration with Terega on its test site in Villefranche-de-Lauragais and with GRDF. Greentech also intends to strengthen its industrial partnerships, including three sectors: cement plants, steelworks and methanization.
