The events took place this Sunday, December 22, 2024 on Avenue d'Espagne in Perpignan.
The vehicle fire caused significant overflows which mobilized the Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters for almost 4 hours this Sunday, December 22, 2024.
In Perpignan, near the former Lidl located at the top of Avenue d'Espagne, a car parked nearby was on fire at 8 a.m. The flames quickly spread to the adjacent business made up of sheet metal walls. The heat spread to the panels which hid, behind, a 1,000 liter tank of used oil. The tank did not resist. It was perforated. The thousand liters of waste oil spilling onto the ground.
A security perimeter had to be set up by agents of the departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis) of Pyrénées-Orientales. Although the vehicle fire was quickly brought under control, 26 firefighters were mobilized to also fight against chemical and pollution risks. Sand was dumped to absorb the oil. A heavy ventilation operation was also carried out to evacuate the smoke which had spread within 200 m2 of premises.
The structure of the building would not be impacted, the company should not be forced into technical unemployment.
At noon this Sunday, the intervention was about to come to an end for the firefighters. A specialized company should take over to remove the residue.
