The Goonies Pagnol version filmed in Haut-de-Cagnes

Be bold to explore an abandoned building, nickname it “the haunted house” to play at shivering, to pretend to be adventurers and try to open the door to the castle's dungeons, to be chased by the gendarmes… These are authentic childhood memories experienced in the 1980s by Frédéri de Saint-Férréol .

Their decor? The typical streets of Haut-de-Cagnes. Ex-student of the Vieux-Bourg school, this graduate in cinema from ESRA in , who still lives in the old town of Cagno having seen him grow up, put these snapshots of his youth – and much more – in a medium-length film. Baptized The side roadthe film, broadcast for the first time this Sunday, December 22, 2024 at the municipal cinema, was largely filmed in this setting, between February 2022 and the end of 2023. “When I was little, there was an atmosphere at the Vieux-Bourg school that was reminiscent of Tom Sawyer, Little Nicholas…I wanted to film all of this”explains the director, who was able to film for two days in the school building just before it was renovated.

“Valuable help” from the village residents

The scenario is that of former schoolchildren returning to greet their departing teacher. The opportunity to remember the past, including a mysterious treasure hunt… On the screen, flashback scenes from childhood are performed by students from the theater classes at the Cagnes cultural center and of the Antibea theater in . A cast completed by Parisian actors Delphine Zentout and Christian Roy, who have distinguished themselves in various films and series.

But not only that: a nod to real life, “Loïc Swiny, one of my classmates at the time, plays a supervisor. The inhabitants of the village played the extras and much more: they allowed us to plug in our projectors or film in front of their homes!”, underlines Frédéri de Saint-Férréol, who also received free permission from the city to put Cagnes in a box. As for the spirit of the medium-length film (34 minutes), which intends to attack a few festivals of the genre in : “my friend Loïc describes it as The Goonies who met Pagnol”, concludes its director.
