Bordeaux – Stade Rennais / James: “We weren’t the same team away as we were at home”
At a press conference, Jordan James was the player present before the trip to Bordeaux.
How do you feel before this match?
We are working to get a victory. We won the previous match, we are confident. Obviously we are big favorites, we have to do the job. So far the season hasn't been what we wanted, but I think we're on the right path and I hope that on Sunday we can maintain this state of mind.
What is the difference between the two coaches you have known here?
Coming here was a big decision for me, away from England. I see different people, different language, it took me a while to settle in. I had discussions with the previous coach but I'm not sure why I wasn't playing. I couldn't tell you. Maybe he didn't trust me, maybe he wanted to give me time to get my bearings. But today I'm playing. This coach trusts me and I'm trying to prove that I deserve it.
Have we talked to you about the importance of the French Cup for Rennes?
I am aware that we won it in 2019. The supporters have expectations and experienced incredible matches with her. We want to do the same. We don't play not to win or not to win trophies. It's a new match to win. The supporters deserve it and we try to do it.
How do you explain your difficulties outside?
It was hard. We weren't the same team away as we were at home. Here we were dominant in the way we played. We are looking for him as a team. The coach also tries to instill something different in us. We adapt to it, the transition takes time. But I think Sunday will be a good opportunity to start winning away again.
Would a victory in Bordeaux have the same flavor as an away victory in Ligue 1?
I think a win is a win. When you're little, no matter the opponent you want to win. We are professionals and we have to do the job. We want to win. We think we can beat any team in the league or cup. This season we haven't been able to do it as much as possible. But our confidence is growing, there are good players in the team. We haven't conceded much in recent matches, it's a good start. We must now score more.
Without boxing day in Ligue 1, will the holidays be special for you?
Yes I will be able to come home, I am very happy, my family too. I haven't been home for Christmas since I was a child. It's great to be able to enjoy it. The transition to France was tough, I feel good now. It will be good to see my loved ones, but when I return to France there will still be time to get back to work. We want to come back and dominate again.
Is the group living well?
The team was happy at that moment (Gronbaek's goal against Angers). We are all friends but also teammates. We want to win. If we succeed, we are very happy. The way this goal was celebrated is explained I think because we were not at the level we wanted. We worked on details in training and it didn't work. But there is no problem. We work in training, we won the match so I think we must be happy.
What do you think of Ligue 1?
It's a great championship, with great players. There's a reason for that, it's a very competitive championship. Many teams are fighting for Europe. That's why I came, to perform against great players. I want to win big matches. It's very different from the way we play in England, but for me it's a top championship.
