A figure which places Hauts-de-France in 5th position among the most populated regions behind Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie.
In six years, the region's population has remained almost stable with a loss of 1,330 inhabitants per year, while the rest of France has recorded growth in its number of inhabitants of 0.4% per year on average.
The North, the most populated department
With 2.6 million residents, the North remains the most populous department in France, ahead of Paris and Bouches-du-Rhône. The growth of its population is on average per year of 0.2% between 2016 and 2022.
Conversely, Pas-de-Calais is losing inhabitants. This department is experiencing a demographic decline, since births are lower than the number of deaths.
On a city scale, the population is still growing significantly in the Lille catchment area. As of January 1, 2022, it had 1.53 million residents.
Among the twenty most populated municipalities in the region, the most dynamic are located in Pas-de-Calais: Lens in the lead and then Arras. In the North, Roubaix and Tourcoing show the strongest demographic growth.
